On November 11th, Middle School and High School Olympic Day set off with the theme of "Outset" ( 启航) and the chant: "The World is Ours to Take." The meaning behind the Olympic day theme is that this year Tsinglan has its first graduating class, where the G12 are going to set off to universities all over the world. We wish them the best of luck as they apply for their dream universities and take on a new journey.
Additionally, this was also the first time Olympic Day is competed through the 5 Houses (Aquila, Centaurus, Cygnus, Lyra, Orion). The Student Council and House Captains participated in the majority of planning for the Olympic day. Instead of competitive sports, they focused more on making every activity interesting and engaging to all students. The G12 House captains lead the groups and students over G9-G12 work together, showing great teamwork, support, and House spirit. Following the Opening Ceremony which included Principal Li Juan's (李娟) Opening Speech emphasizing "No Sport, no Tsinghua" and a hip-hop performance, the ten games began. Among them included Tug-of-war
(拔河),Flag-pulling(扯腰),and a tennis relay(网球接力).To sum up, all the dedicated time and endless meetings were worth it since through this experience, strangers turned into teammates who support each other on the playing field and everyone learned the essentials of teamwork.
Head Organizer of Olympic Day: Crystal Lai G11:
"Friday's Olympic day was unique, perhaps because we competed through Houses or because of the 10 fun games designed by the PE department teachers.During the one month of preparation for this PEday, there were many meetings, planning, arguments, and communication with teachers and House captains. Before PE day, many people complained about the activities and didn't want them to be run through Houses. But in the end, happily, everyone thought this was the best PE day!!! There was a lot of positive feedback given. At times, I was worried that students wouldn't like Houses, weren't willing to engage in the activities, and that the House captains wouldn't know what they were responsible for. All my worries disappeared when I saw how engaged the house members were. There was so much teamwork, support, and house spirit that I am still amazed at, even retrospectively.
Additionally, the House captains took on their roles with responsibility, leading the groups well. I'd also like to tell everyone that: it doesn't matter if we win or lose; what's more important is that we all had fun! As the person in charge of Houses, I would like to say a big thanks to Jasmine, Suki, House captains, and other Student Council members for their support! Without you guys, Olympic day would not have been the success it was. Another big thanks to the PE teachers for realizing and implementing our big ideas.
Orion House Captains: Han 杨知翰, Helen 李诗缘:
"Honestly, I think most of us didn't have high expectations on this Olympic Day, but the genuine satisfaction and feedback of our house members (and also other members of other houses) proved it wrong. I vividly remembered the contrast of the slight awkwardness between each other during the tug of war at the very start of the day, and the casualness in calling out each other's name, laughing while complaining about why we were always one point less than the opponent group as the time went by. Slowly I realized it did not matter how the games were set up, or whether we were the ultimate winner.
We had valuable, and unexpected moments where we burst out laughing when we couldn't hit the target 3 or 4 times in a roll during the fencing challenge, or when we chatted about which PE teacher is cuter during break time —— moments that we typically cannot have during a regular competition-oriented Olympic day. Maybe, the mere fact that we could stay together while having fun was why we could laugh like that. It won't be a complete story if I ignore the clashes and discouraging moments, but I believe it was because of those moments, we are then able to gain some new perspectives and reflections. The difference is, we perhaps did the reflection alone before, but now we have support and companionship from the rest of the group. Yep, it's a well-balanced combination between the zeal for winning and the light-hearted laughter."
