On October 5, 2022, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three scientists. They are Morten Meldal, a Danish scientist, and American scientists Karl Barry Sharpless and Carolyn R. Bertozzi. Bertozzi graduated from Harvard University and is currently a professor at Stanford University. Before the price was given out, she had also contributed significantly to medical research. As the only woman among the three winners and the eighth female scientist in history, Bertozzi received extensive attention from audiences. However, Bertozzi's life is not rigid and monotonous; it is filled with other interests. The richness of her life and her achievements made her legendary.
The Eighth Female Winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry
Since 121 years ago (beginning in 1901), only eight women scientists have won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. When Bertozzi won the prize, she was shocked to call her father and tell him the good news; Mr. Bertozzi probably guessed her words: "You won the Nobel Prize, didn't you?" In addition to the Nobel Prize, Bertozzi has also won other awards and achievements. She showed her talent in music and sports in middle school, and chose Harvard among multiple universities; Five years after graduation, she became a doctor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley; In 1999, Bertozzi became the youngest winner of MacArthur's "Genius Award"; In 2010, she won the Lemelson Massachusetts Institute of Technology Award. She also created the topic of Bioorthogonal chemistry, which is the research direction of the works that won this Nobel Prize.
"This is so hard, and I love it!"
It is no coincidence that Bertozzi was able to win so many awards later in life. However, this chemistry scientist who won the chemistry Nobel Prize discovered her interest in chemistry only in her second year of college. Before that, Bertozzi, who had already moved on to Harvard, chose pre-med and even chose to major in biology at the end of her freshman year at college. Interestingly, The reason that Bertozzi realizes her interest in chemistry was very dramatic. In her second year of college, one organic chemistry class became notorious for being too grueling. Bertozzi's classmates often complained that the memory training in the class was too painful as if the professors were deliberately making the course difficult. But it inspired her - in one interview, she said, ‘It was by far the class that I enjoyed most and I didn’t find it at all tedious. It matched my brain.’ In graduate school, Bertozzi furthered her studies at Berkeley with her mentor Mark Bednarski. In her third
year, however, Bednarski was diagnosed with colon cancer and was unable to continue his research, which nearly changed her path. But the uplifting thing is that instead of transferring to another group, Bertozzi and several of her lab partners completed their PhDs alone, without any supervision. She later recalled, ‘This wouldn’t happen now because of regulation and safety concerns but back then it was a bit of a Wild West!’
Bertozzi's Colorful Life
It might be easy to think of Bertozzi as a scientific genius...or even a weirdo. But if you think so, it would be wrong. Although she was already talented in science in high school, she was even more outstanding in her seemingly unrelated area of music and sports. A less well-known fact is that a large part of Bertozzi's desire to attend Harvard was to enter the music department and have a major in music. Though she later chose medicine at the suggestion of her parents. Bertozzi has been a professional music producer since high school and has won numerous awards for composition and music. After college, though music failed to become her main career, it remained her passion. While studying,
Bertozzi continued her music dream: she formed a heavy metal band called "Bored of Education" with her friends and earned back her tuition money by playing gigs. In sports, Bertozzi also has a full talent. She loved fitness and was good at outdoor sports. She was good at basketball and had trained professionally in football. Because of her success in sports, she was awarded athletic scholarships to several schools, which further helped her get into Harvard.
As high school students, what can we learn from Bertozzi? Such an example in the chemistry field is a role model we can only look forward to and a goal we can learn from. As mentioned above, Bertozzi has a wide range of interests, including music and football, while going deeply into the academic field. We can also try more activities in our spare time; not for fame and achievements, but for physical and mental pleasure. In addition, Bertozzi decided on the way that made her famous and fought for all her life in her sophomore year of college. For those who are still worried about their future today, don't worry- it is okay to focus on thepresent work.
Finally, encouragement from SheSTEMs: we hope all students interested in STEM can take Bertozzi as a model, pick up confidence, and go for your goal.
