Hi Keyil First of all, congratulations on being nominated for the Tsinglaner of the Month. I heard that you have a special bond with music, especially with the Cello, can you elaborate on how this "spark" was created?
It all started randomly when
the orchestra had just been established, and I suddenly changed my mind about attending the orchestra audition even after the deadline for signing up was already due.
The orchestra teachers first recommended I learn the French horn, but I didn't feel like it, so eventually, I chose the cello based on my first instinct.
The Cello might not be an instrument that everyone knows of, can you give us a brief introduction about it and a few tips for people who want to try it out?
The Cello is a part of the string family in an orchestra and has a pitch ranging from alto to bass. Most of the time, it is hard to recognize the notes of the cello part in the orchestra ensemble due to its low pitch and little melodies. However, it sounds lyrical and magnificent whenever there's a melody. As for the tips, the only thing I would say is to practice hearing skills.
One thing I love about this combination (you and the cello) is the size contrast, have you met any challenges because of this? How does it feel to be playing such a big instrument?
Actually, I love the size of Cello. lt's like a full-size companion that I can lean on and use as a model. But, to be honest, carrying it for a long distance would be very unpleasant, and you always have to be extra careful.
What about the challenges you've met overall on your music journey, was there anything that made you want to give up? If so, how did you stick through it?
Because I started learning the Cello late, I don't have excellent skills, and also I don't have perfect pitch, but I never give up practicing it; I believe my efforts are not unavailing and will manifest their values eventually.
Wow, I can't imagine how hard it is to carry such a big instrument around. In your free time, then, are there any other ways where you engage with music?
I like watching the videos made by Twoset Violin, two amazing YouTubers on the classical music channel. In addition, I joined the Dreamer Chamber Ensemble club in our school, filming music-related videos and sending them to Bilibili and Youtube. Moreover, during a voluntary teaching program I went to last summer, I taught my friends in Guizhou to play the recorder.
At the same time, 1 know that you're also a scholarship student right? How do you balance your school life and extracurriculars so well?
Spending one and a half hours on music per day is still manageable, or else 1 might waste those times doing meaningless things. I treat the rehearsals as a way to relax my brain from academic work; once I have that kind of attitude, it won't be a burden anymore. At the same time, it can also boost my efficiency as my free time has reduced.
Wow, thank you so much for doing this Interview with me! Hopefully, you will continue to have a successful Cello career and I hope that you will carry on with your music journey! Again, congratulations on being the "Tsinglaner of the Month” for our November 2022 issue!
