One Less Thing You Have to Worry About, Period
Science & Health Club x Ivy Zhou, Maggie Dai
The Tsinglan Science & Health Club and Student Council member Ivy Zhou collaboratively created Tsinglan's first-period station that provides period pads and tampons for all faculties and high school students. The purpose of this project is to help girls with their urgent need for female hygiene products and to promote the idea of rejecting menstrual shame.
I came up with the inspiration for the period station from an awkward experience.
It was a normal school day when I found out that my period suddenly came, I woefully looked for someone around to borrow a menstrual pad. After asking around in vain for menstrual pads, I had to go to the nurse's clinic on the first floor to get a period pad. When I finally got the period pad and went back to the fourth floor, I was already late for my class.
At that time, I thought, it will be great if I would not have to go that far to get period pads.
Proposing this idea in the StuCo group chat, writing the proposal, cooperating with the Science & Health Club, making the budget, purchasing period pads, preparing for the presentation, delivering the presentation...
When the audience was creating rounds of applause, I felt a sense of achievement arising from deep down in my heart.
Period has long been a taboo in many cultures and countries: women during their period are considered as "dirty" in some cultures; over 5000 different slang terms and euphemisms were used for the word "period" throughout the world; stores usually provide black plastic bags to hold period pads... The period station not only provides convenience to all female faculties and students on campus but also promote girls to face up to their physiological needs and face up to the taboo of period.
Thank you so much to bring changes to our community. I am so proud that you are a member of the Tsinglan Family." This is a sentence from the email that a teacher wrote to me after the presentation on the period station. People who advocate for changes are important for the well-being of a community, but without the support from the Science and Health club for making posters of scientific knowledge regarding periods, purchasing the period pads, tirelessly having discussions of details, and most importantly - the support from school leaders, this project wouldn't have come true.
